It is important that my students feel seen and acknowledged in their educational and academic journey. My studio environment is one that demonstrates a safe learning space that is used to expand and strengthen their knowledge in fine arts. I emphasize on building what students already know and how new information can shift their perspective and artistic lens.
I have had the privilege of teaching digital art and watching students learn and become confident through my teaching philosophy. I have taught Art 250 and Art 303 both digital art classes at the University at Buffalo as part of the core course curriculum.
My approach to teaching is through guided demonstrations with each program that is being utilized within the curriculum. Once students grasp an understanding of the programs they develop independent skills to approach future projects using any software that comes their way. They are guided with research and the application of prior skills to achieve an understanding of how digital tools are used as a means rather than an end product.
Engagement is key for classroom development as well as an understanding of studio rules. As the instructor, my students learn by my example within the learning space. During critique of class projects, we follow a guideline as to how to properly engage in constructive and conducive criticism; never judgment. Students are also instructed in keeping a sketchbook for the duration of the class. Sketchbooks are used not only as an outlet for creative output but also as a record of their progress in learning studio and digital art skills in the class. Students are also encouraged to work together and collaborate to problem solve any issues they have with software or art blocks.
A work in progress
As an artist and art instructor, I am also constantly learning with my students. New technologies are brought to the forefront of art and technology and it is only appropriate for me to continue my education learning. Being able to teach successfully depends on the interaction one has with their students and the connections we make with each other professionally and artistically speaking. I take my teaching and communication seriously by knowing my audience and taking time in getting to know my students.
Teaching is best when everyone, including the instructor, is learning and taking the energy to create a safe learning environment. My teaching focuses on providing the best environment for my students and is an ongoing process.
